Water Polo – Double Scottish success for Stirling Water Polo

On the last playing weekend of the year, Stirling Water Polo were attempting to win two Scottish Age Group titles.

First up on Saturday was the Scottish Junior Championships which was played at the National Swimming Academy in Stirling. This competition is for Under 14s and was straight knockout tournament. Stirling were impressive in all their matches and first up were local opponents Forth Valley and they opened their account with a 9-1 win. Next up came Kirkintilloch & Kilsyth and another win, this time 6-2. This progressed Stirling to the semi finals where they met and defeated Ren 96 by a score of 9-1. This brought Stirling, who were beaten finalists last year, up against Cup holders Dunfermline but this time Stirling came out on top 6-1.

Also in this competition Stirling entered a 2nd Team in the Plate competition and the young squad acquitted themselves well with 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses.

An excellent tournament for our young players and our third win in four years for at this age group level.

On Sunday, it was the turn of our Under 16 Team who had their two final matches in the Scottish Under 16 League. Unbeaten to date, Stirling needed a point from these matches to clinch the title. Stirling were unfortunately without several players with Scottish Internationalists Harry Gray and Alexander Harris taking part in Great Britain trials in Manchester. First up was Portobello, and in an exciting but scrappy game, Portobello edged the win 12-11.  Straight after this game the Team were up against Menzieshill and although tired and disappointed following their first loss, they collectively rallied and won the game convincingly 15-9.

An excellent year for our Under 16s who, in winning the League, completed the Scottish double following their Championship win early in the year.

It is going well for Stirling Water Polo, but we are always looking for new players to strenghten our Teams. If you would like to be involved or to try the sport out in the New Year then please come along to our Sunday session. If you want more information, then please e-mail daviddalziel23@aol.com
